Festive Fun With The Kids

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again – Christmas! And it’s even more special for children, so if you’re looking for something to do together as a family, we’ve got plenty of ideas for adding some magic to the season and making some lovely memories.

The big countdown

You just can’t beat an advent calendar to get you in the mood for Christmas, and children love the excitement of opening the door every day to find a special treat inside. Why not make it more special by making your own? Our Homemade Chocolate Advent Set is the perfect way to get the kids involved in the fun of making (and devouring!) their own home-made chocolates. Simply melt your favourite chocolate and fill each of the moulds, then allow to set before wrapping. And it doesn’t have to stop there – the kids can get really creative by decorating their chocolates with piped icing, contrasting chocolate, or even a bit of gold shimmer.

These chocolate treats also fit perfectly into the pockets of our lovely Fill Your Own Advent Calendar. This charming fabric calendar can be hung up in the kitchen or living room and has 24 pockets printed with cute festive designs so you can add your own little sweet treats and toys for the lucky recipient to enjoy.

Alternatively, if chocolate calendars aren’t your thing, our Christmas Plasticine Advent Calendar Kit is a really fun way to count down to the big day. This kit comes with everything your child needs to sculpt a different Christmassy character from coloured Plasticine each day, including a snowman, a candy cane, Santa, presents and many more… and it’ll keep them quiet for a bit while they create their mini masterpieces!

And if you love a more traditional Advent, our ever-popular Bethlehem Advent Stable is always a hit with our customers, both young and old, with its beautiful nativity set and little drawers revealing a different nativity character every day through Advent.

Baking Christmas magic

Baking is a big part of Christmas, and getting the kids involved is a great idea – after all, no child can resist helping when cake is involved! You could bake home-made goodies to gift to loved ones, or make some festive bakes to enjoy on Christmas day – whatever you make, you’ll have hours of family fun in the process. Filled with brightly coloured baking tools which are the perfect size for little hands, our Kids’ Ultimate Baking Gift Set is just the thing to help budding bakers develop their skills and join in with the fun.

Why not have a go at making some yummy Christmas biscuits? All you need is a simple biscuit recipe and some festive cookie cutters, and the kids can have lots of fun decorating them. Or you could make our jolly Melted Snowman Biscuits for a cute twist on festive biscuits.

And don’t forget the all-important mince pies! The kids will love getting stuck into this task: they can help with stirring the mincemeat (if you’re making it from scratch), rolling out and cutting out the pastry, and assembling the yummy mince pies. Try our simple recipe for some decorated Mini Mince Pies with pretty festive shapes adorning the top instead of the traditional lid – they’re perfect for gifting to friends and family, or for nibbling with a warming drink after a brisk winter walk. And don’t forget the tradition of getting every member of the family to take a turn at stirring the mincemeat mix and making a wish… what better way to involve everyone?

T’was the night before Christmas…

… when all through the house. Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse… but if the kids are running riot and buzzing with excitement about the big day, it’s probably not very quiet! Why not make it more magical with a Christmas Eve box? Find a lovely box or a hamper – you can personalise one for each child – and fill it with special treats for them to open on Christmas Eve. You could fill it with anything from some new festive pyjamas and a pair of cosy socks, to a new game to play or a DVD to watch, and don’t forget some yummy snacks to nibble on.

We’ve got lots of lovely little Christmassy treats which make a lovely addition to the box, including our delicious Rudolph Chocolate Melt: this little chocolate bombe has a hidden surprise – melt it in a mug of hot milk and watch as the mini marshmallows pop to the top… magical! And it even comes with a sachet of gold shimmer to sprinkle over the top for a truly festive finish. Check out our fun range of stocking fillers for lots more inspiration for your Christmas Eve box.

Just bring out the box on 24th December and watch their little faces light up as they open it up!

More festive fun

There are lots of other activities for the kids to stick to over the festive period, such as making their own Christmas stocking to hang up, creating decorations using salt dough, making paper chains, or putting together a home-made wreath to hang on the front door. They could even make some lovely Christmas cards for friends and family – try making hand print reindeers or hand print Christmas trees.

Regardless of what fun activities you and the kids decide to get up to, remember to take the time to relax, enjoy your time together and have a very merry Christmas!
